A Variety reporter asked Tate McRae point-blank if she's a MAGA supporter. She didn't say "no."
She's been under the microscope these past few months: her duet "What I Want" with Morgan Wallen, whose 2021 controversy over using a racial slur still casts a long shadow years later. Then there's her rumored relationship with New Jersey Devils player Jack Hughes, who after winning Olympic gold this winter with Team USA, joined teammates on a White House visit—where they laughed on camera as Trump joked he'd be "impeached" if he didn't invite the women's team too.
Put those two things together, and the internet started slapping the MAGA label on McRae.
Her response sounded carefully crafted: "I like to express where I stand through the organizations I support and the energy at my shows," she told Variety. "I think it's pretty clear who I am and what I stand for. I hope my fans can see that through where I put my energy."
Not a single word directly denied the MAGA accusation, and not a single word directly addressed Wallen or Hughes either. She let her actions answer instead—she's previously supported The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention nonprofit serving the LGBTQ+ community, and a portion of proceeds from some of her merch goes to the Global Fund for Women. Both choices are clear statements on their own; she just chose to let them speak for her rather than tackle the reporter's question head-on.
McRae's latest album, *So Close To What*, dropped in 2025, featuring singles "Sports Car" and "Revolving Door," which earned a four-star review from NME. This year she also landed her first-ever Grammy nomination, for Best Dance Pop Recording. Come summer, she'll headline Lollapalooza alongside Olivia Dean, Charli xcx, Lorde, and The xx.
