Taylor Swift Steps Behind the Camera for "Patient Zero," Set to Debut at the 2026 VMAs

The trailer also shows Colin Farrell stepping out of a car and walking toward the camera, Dakota Johnson looking dazed at a party scene, and Swift herself standing at a bathroom sink. The tension between the three feels closer to a condensed short film than any of her previous self-directed videos.

"Patient Zero" officially drops this Friday (September 25), featured on "The Encore," the extended edition of "The Life Of A Showgirl" that adds four new tracks and is now available for pre-order. The full music video is set to premiere this Sunday (September 27) at the MTV VMAs, where Swift will also receive the inaugural "MTV VMA Artist Director Honors." This year's ceremony will air live on MTV in the U.S. and stream on Paramount+ (Premium), with global availability starting the following day (September 28).

Swift directed the video herself, with cinematography by three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki, whose credits include "The Revenant," "Birdman," and "Gravity." Bringing in a cinematographer of this caliber suggests Swift is aiming for more than just a promotional video this time — she's going for a short film with genuine cinematic quality. According to People, Dakota Johnson attended Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding at Madison Square Garden in New York this past summer, and their personal friendship may be part of what led to this collaboration.

This isn't Swift's first time in the director's chair. She has previously directed music videos for "The Fate Of Ophelia," "Fortnight," "Anti-Hero," and "Cardigan," and wrote and directed the 2021 short film "All Too Well: The Short Film," starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien, which swept Best Long-Form Video, Video Director, and Video of the Year at the 2022 VMAs. Whether "Patient Zero" can keep that streak alive remains to be seen come Sunday.

The original "The Life Of A Showgirl" dropped in October 2025, produced by Max Martin and Shellback, featuring singles like "The Fate Of Ophelia," "Opalite," and "Elizabeth Taylor." When announcing "The Encore," Swift shared that she and the two producers took a trip to Sweden — "we just wanted to look back on the year together and say thanks, but it turned out there was a studio right there, so we ended up writing even more songs."
