Trump Threatens to Hike Canada Auto Tariffs to 50%, Canada-US Trade Talks Collapse Over the Weekend

Trump threatened on Monday to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, and steel to 50%, set to take effect in January 2027. This marks the latest escalation in the trade standoff, coming after Canadian PM Mark Carney declared his country was "at war" with the US.

Trump Threatens to Hike Canada Auto Tariffs to 50%, Canada-US Trade Talks Collapse Over the Weekend

"They think they are entitled to whatever they want from us, but the facts are, we don't need Canada, and they need us!" Trump wrote on social media on Monday. Following that statement came a new tariff plan that could hit both countries' auto industries hard: tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, steel, and other goods would be raised to 50%, set to take effect on January 1, 2027.

This tariff standoff traces back to 2025. The US imposed its first round of tariffs on Canada that year, and Canada responded by banning the sale of American alcohol in nearly every province — a ban that remains in place today. In July this year, Trump announced a 50% tariff on Canadian whiskey, beer, and other goods, originally set to take effect on August 19. But after reports emerged that the US and Canada had reached a trade deal pending final paperwork, the tariff was delayed by three days.

In the end, the deal never materialized. Late last Friday night, officials from both countries confirmed the talks had broken down, each side blaming the other for worsening the situation. According to The New York Times, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Saturday that Canada was now "at war" with the US on trade, and would impose retaliatory tariffs on American electronics, food, and other goods.

The auto tariffs are the next step in this standoff. If the 50% rate takes effect as planned in early 2027, the impact won't be limited to Canadian automakers. For comparison, the tariffs Trump imposed on automakers worldwide in April 2025 already cost these companies a combined $35.4 billion in the year through this past March. Whether this new tariff will actually go into effect remains uncertain.
