What to know | 'Until Dawn 2' Arrives January 28, New Studio Trades Snowy Mountain for Tropical Island Horror

The 2015 original had players deciding who lives and who dies during one terrifying night at a snow-covered mountain lodge—and now the sequel finally has a release date. Sony announced 'Until Dawn 2' will launch exclusively on PS5 on January 28, alongside a pre-order trailer centered on star Dacre Montgomery.

More notable than the sequel's content is the change in development studio. The original was made by Supermassive Games, but this time UK-based Liverpool studio Firesprite is taking over—a team previously known mainly for VR titles. Based on what's been revealed so far, Firesprite appears to be sticking with the original's B-movie horror tone, just relocating from an isolated snowy mountain lodge to a tropical island. The temperature's changed, but the danger hasn't.

The original game's most famous mechanic was its "Butterfly Effect" system, where every choice players made determined the fates of the teenage characters in the story. Whether this system carries over unchanged to the sequel hasn't been detailed by the official sources yet.

The cast is another point worth watching. The original leaned on Hollywood-caliber names like Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere to give it star power—Panettiere passed away just last month, which brought renewed attention to the original game. The cast for 'Until Dawn 2' isn't quite as star-studded, but 'Stranger Things' fans will instantly recognize Dacre Montgomery, who played Billy Hargrove in seasons two and three and made a brief cameo in season four. He gets substantial screen time in the new trailer.

'Until Dawn 2' launches exclusively on PS5 on January 28. Pricing and further story details have not yet been announced.
