In the early 2000s, US military intelligence kept an eye on this distillery's old stills and surveillance equipment on Islay's west coast, at one point suspecting the site of producing weapons of mass destruction. Rather than clear things up, Bruichladdich leaned into the absurdity and released a whisky called "Whisky of Mass Distinction"—turning the bungled accusation into a pun.
Two years later, in 2005, fishermen on Islay hauled up a bright yellow remote-controlled submarine from the sea, which was later traced back to the UK Ministry of Defence. Bruichladdich seized the moment and released the first-generation "Yellow Submarine"; when the Royal Navy sent officers to retrieve the equipment, the distillery simply cracked open a bottle and poured a round for the crew. This self-deprecating origin story has been told for two decades since—a second edition came in 2018, and now, as the distillery approaches its 25th anniversary since reopening, the third generation officially returns.
75% Bourbon Cask, 25% Wine Cask, Aged 14 Years
"Yellow Submarine III" is made from 100% Scottish barley, matured on Islay for 14 years, and bottled at cask strength of 54.2% ABV—non-chill filtered, no added color. This time, head distiller Adam Hannett didn't replicate the original 2005 recipe, opting instead for 75% first-fill bourbon casks paired with 25% first- and second-fill French red wine casks.
The bourbon casks bring creamy vanilla and honeyed sweetness with elegant floral notes; with the wine cask ratio pushed up to a quarter, more pronounced fruit tones emerge alongside layers of French nuts and spice. The palate opens with bright orange peel acidity, followed by orange blossom, crisp apple, and caramel pudding sweetness, finishing on golden heather and a hint of sea salt. The liquid's own journey feels closer to Islay's true character than the whimsical story on the label. The bottle still wears its signature bright yellow coat—unmistakable from a distance.
Three-Day Xinyi Pop-Up Comes with a Submarine Building Block Set
Taiwan is getting the limited 14-year edition this time, retailing at NT$3,400. Every bottle purchased comes with a Taiwan-exclusive mini "Yellow Submarine" building block set, letting buyers assemble their own model submarine docked outside the distillery.
This submarine will "sail into" Taipei's Xinyi District from August 14 to 16, docking at a three-day pop-up booth in the plaza in front of Breeze Nan Shan. Besides selling the limited edition, the booth will also serve an Islay Highball mixed with Bruichladdich 12-Year as its base—if you want to sip a specialty cocktail with floral, fruity notes and a briny sea breeze finish on the streets of Xinyi, these three days are your only chance.
