Where to Stay in Banff National Park: From a Fossil-Studded Castle Hotel to a 33-Room Lakeside Lodge

From Fairmont Banff Springs, a castle hotel embedded with 450-million-year-old fossils, to Moraine Lake Lodge, a 33-room property with its own private canoes, accommodations around Banff National Park span an enormous range—each with its own scale and its own approach to hospitality.

Where to Stay in Banff National Park: From a Fossil-Studded Castle Hotel to a 33-Room Lakeside Lodge

From castle hotels dating back to Canada's Pacific railway era to tiny lodges with just thirty-three rooms and their own private canoes along the lakeshore, the spectrum of accommodations around Banff National Park is remarkably wide. Tamara Elliott, a longtime Calgary resident who treats Banff as her own backyard, shared with Condé Nast Traveler the places she considers most worth a stay—from the gravitas of historic architecture to the intimacy of a lakeside cabin. The choice really comes down to which version of Banff you're after.

Two Castle Hotels, Two Different Philosophies of Hospitality

Fairmont Banff Springs is the heavyweight of this list. Set at the foot of Mount Rundle, this estate-like hotel with 768 rooms is built from Tyndall limestone embedded with 450-million-year-old fossils, and its Scottish baronial architecture has earned it the nickname "Castle of the Rockies." The hotel's own Banff Springs Golf Course is home to Devil's Cauldron, one of the highest-ranked holes in the world—round it off with afternoon tea and a booked mineral bath, and you've got, in Elliott's words, a complete Banff day.

Taking a similarly refined but far more intimate approach is the Post Hotel & Spa in the village of Lake Louise. Renovated by a Swiss hotelier, this 1942 property has earned both a Michelin One Key and a Wine Spectator Grand Award thanks to a cellar stocked with over 27,000 bottles. Its nearly one hundred rooms include riverside options and standalone cabins. The hotel is equally welcoming to pets and families—dogs staying here get their own bed and homemade treats, with a portion of pet fees donated to the local SPCA—while guests headed to Moraine Lake can take the hotel's private shuttle, skipping the lines and booking system of the public transit option, with car seats available for kids.

Where the Lake Takes Center Stage and the Hotel Steps Back

Nearly every one of the 539 rooms at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is in quiet competition with Lake Louise itself—the turquoise water backed by Victoria Glacier is one of the most photographed scenes in all of Canada. The hotel's newly opened Basin Glacial Waters spa offers a hot-springs-style soaking experience, and once the lake freezes over in winter, guests can skate on it or take a horse-drawn sleigh ride.

Perched on the slopes of Sulphur Mountain, Rimrock Resort Hotel will complete a full property-wide renovation in 2026. Among its 320 rooms is a new roughly 1,300-square-foot Infinity two-bedroom suite with its own outdoor barrel sauna and fireside terrace. That same fall, the hotel's new soaking facilities and infinity pool are also set to open in phases.

And then there's the smallest, most understated of them all: Moraine Lake Lodge, with just thirty-three rooms. Guests get free use of canoes to paddle out into the glacial-blue water at the heart of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, and in autumn, the Larch Valley trail—famous for its golden larch trees—starts right from the front door. Dinner reservations at the glass-walled Walter Wilcox restaurant are open only to guests, with a wine list drawn from the lodge's own vintage cellar.

For travelers who'd rather self-cater in Banff or the nearby town of Canmore, there's no shortage of apartments and standalone rentals with rooftop hot tubs, fireplaces, and ski gear storage—most within walking distance of town restaurants and trailheads.

The hotels mentioned can be checked for real-time rates on Booking.com or Expedia, while standalone homes and apartment rentals are mostly listed on Airbnb and Vrbo.
