YouTube Public View Counts Set to Jump Across the Board — But Creator Payout Threshold Runs on a Different Algorithm

Starting August 24, YouTube will change how public view counts are calculated — a video will count as "viewed" the moment it starts playing. But creator earnings will still be calculated using the original Engaged Views standard, meaning the two sets of numbers will now clearly diverge.

YouTube Public View Counts Set to Jump Across the Board — But Creator Payout Threshold Runs on a Different Algorithm

Starting next week, the view counts you see on YouTube are all about to jump — but that doesn't mean audiences are actually watching more. YouTube has announced that starting August 24, it will roll out a unified new rule worldwide for calculating public view counts: a video counts as viewed the moment it starts playing. This logic used to apply only to certain formats, but now it'll apply across all videos.

The old calculation method hasn't been scrapped — it's been renamed "Engaged Views," kept around for creators who care about how long viewers actually stick around. As YouTube puts it on its support page: "We used to have multiple view-counting systems across different formats, but we heard from creators that they wanted to eliminate this metric confusion and get an accurate picture of their true reach — that's why we made this change."

This move isn't exactly new, either. Back in 2025, YouTube already scrapped the minimum watch-time threshold for Shorts, a change that brought Shorts' data logic closer in line with how TikTok and Instagram calculate views. This time, it's basically taking that same logic and rolling it out to regular videos as well.

For creators looking to monetize on YouTube — or already doing so — here's the thing to actually remember: public view counts going up doesn't mean the payout threshold moves with them. YouTube has explicitly stated that creator earnings will still be based on "Engaged Shorts views" and "Engaged Watch Hours," both of which can be checked under Advanced Mode in YouTube Analytics. That line is worth flagging specifically because just last week, YouTube doubled some of the participation requirements for the Partner Program. So on one side, you've got public numbers that look flashier; on the other, an earnings standard that's untouched — or even stricter. This time, the two lines are being kept completely separate.
