一首歌寫了八年，改了196個版本，最後才敢把成品寄給本人——這大概是U2〈The Mirror Maker (Rosalía)〉最值得記下的一件事。Bono在接受《Rolling Stone》訪問時透露，U2即將於11月13日發行的第16張錄音室專輯《Carnaval De Luz》第四軌，是一首寫給Rosalía的歌，而這也是繼2017年《Songs Of Experience》之後，樂團首張全新創作專輯。
“We normally just write songs about people in jail or dead people,” Bono開玩笑地說，“You know, dead heroes, or trying to get them out of jail. This is just celebrating somebody just because they're an extraordinary artist.”他表示自己特別著迷於Rosalía今年推出的專輯《Lux》，這張作品以13種語言的演唱、管弦編制與電子聲響探討靈性與宗教意象，而“lux”與“luz”恰好都指向「光」——這與U2自己正在摸索的《Carnaval De Luz》主題不謀而合。“She's arrived at the same point just before us, which is annoying and also really inspiring,” Bono說，並認為兩人在藝術上都對「re-enchantment of the world」抱有共同興趣。
這首歌的身世比想像中曲折。〈The Mirror Maker〉最早可回溯至2017年，當時只是The Edge的一段demo，暫名〈Kuti Rocker〉，靈感來自Afrobeat先驅Fela Kuti。之後它又歷經〈Delilah〉、〈Child Of The Age〉等不同標題與樣貌，直到Rosalía成為歌詞主角才定型。製作人Jacknife Lee透露，最終收進專輯的版本已經是第196次修改——他們刻意讓歌曲從最初的電氣搖滾質地，轉向更貼近David Bowie「Ziggy Stardust」時期與T. Rex式的木吉他氛圍，理由是不希望整首歌聽起來太過陽剛。
Bono也坦承這段漫長的創作期造成了一點尷尬：“It's just a little embarrassing that she became so popular before we put out the song. But that doesn't matter to me. Everyone knew about Martin Luther King too.”
