Lucy Davis Reveals Terminal Cancer, Then Trolls Fans With an "R.I.P." Joke

The Office UK star Lucy Davis went public with a terminal breast cancer diagnosis, then responded to the flood of concern with a skateboarding lesson video, gently correcting fans who mistook the news for an obituary.

Lucy Davis Reveals Terminal Cancer, Then Trolls Fans With an "R.I.P." Joke

Let's clear up the confusion first: Lucy Davis has not passed away. In her latest Instagram post, she specifically called out "a few friends who misread the news and commented R.I.P.," then added, "you'll be pleased to know I'm alive—hooray!" delivered as lightly as if she were talking about someone else entirely.

Rewind to August 11: the actress, best known for playing Dawn in the UK version of The Office and for her role in Wonder Woman, publicly shared that she'd been diagnosed with "incurable" breast cancer, adding that she plans to live "as much fun as possible" with it. No dramatic buildup, just stated plainly—and the comments section immediately flooded with thousands of responses, including one from Jenna Fischer, who played Pam (a character based directly on Dawn) in the US version of The Office.

Three days later, on August 14, Davis returned with a follow-up post, describing herself as "completely overwhelmed" and saying she never expected a cancer announcement to generate this level of attention: "Honestly, I'm still in shock." She also admitted she was still working through the flood of comments, writing, "give me some time, I'll get through them all."

Then came the video. To "lighten the mood," she shared footage from her one and only skateboarding lesson years ago, filmed during production of the Disney series The Villains Of Valley View, alongside co-star Malachi Barton. She's laughing uncontrollably in the clip, joking that she'd "finally discovered I have zero athletic ability whatsoever." The choice says something on its own: rather than let the conversation sit on the weight of the diagnosis, she left behind an image that makes people laugh right along with her.

The response to her original post was substantial too—The Office creator Ricky Gervais and current DC Studios head James Gunn both left heart emojis, while director Edgar Wright, who worked with her on Shaun Of The Dead, wrote: "Love you, Lucy, always will, see you soon."

The timing carries a bit of weight—this year marks The Office's 25th anniversary, and Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook just reunited with the BBC last month to film a commemorative special. Davis wasn't part of that reunion, but in her own way, she's given this milestone year another moment worth remembering.
