Half-Life Fans, Take Note: Valve's Steam Frame Headset Comes With a Free Remastered Classic

Valve's new standalone VR headset, Steam Frame, launches at $1,059 (256GB) or $1,299 (1TB). Buyers get a bonus: a remastered "Half-Life: Alyx," rebuilt with foveated rendering so it runs directly on the device, no PC required.

Half-Life Fans, Take Note: Valve's Steam Frame Headset Comes With a Free Remastered Classic

Valve once thought it would be impossible to squeeze "Half-Life: Alyx" onto a standalone VR headset. The 2020 PC VR title comes packed with massive game assets that originally required a computer to run. But according to Valve, foveated rendering combined with eye tracking turned out to be the "solution," letting the team port the entire game to the new Steam Frame headset without altering any game assets or sacrificing the gameplay experience. The tradeoff was over a year of additional software development, all poured into Vulkan drivers and SteamVR—engineering work Valve says will benefit other games running on Steam Frame down the line.

Pricing for Steam Frame has now been revealed alongside the announcement. The 256GB version costs $1,059, while the 1TB version runs $1,299, with both versions including the controllers. After purchasing the headset, players can log into Steam Frame, head to the settings menu, and redeem a code for the remastered "Half-Life: Alyx."

Accessories were also unveiled alongside the headset. The charging power supply unit (PSU) costs $29 and is used to charge the built-in 21.6Wh battery—though if you already own a high-wattage USB-C charger, you can skip this purchase. The Accessory Replacement Kit costs $49 and includes a facial interface gasket, a head cushion, and a light blocker. The Ergonomic Accessories Kit costs $59 and includes two controller wrist straps, two controller strap battery covers, a top head strap, and an extended light blocker. Separately, Zenni Optical will offer customizable prescription lenses down the road, and Arcturus plans to release an RGB camera accessory—pricing for both has yet to be announced.

Preorder Order Decided by Lottery, Waitlist System Returns

Unlike the Steam Machine, which was recently reported to be delayed, Steam Frame is launching on schedule—though the preorder process is just as complicated. Players must sign up for their desired configuration before 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 17, at which point Valve will run a one-time random drawing to determine order, sending out emails that same day to let people know whether they landed a preorder slot or got placed on the waitlist. Anyone who signs up after September 17 will be added to the back of the waitlist. Valve plans to start sending out the first batch of purchase notifications on September 18, with more to follow based on supply. If you receive a waitlist notification, it means current preorder capacity has been reached, and you'll need to wait for a follow-up notice.

Valve also revealed several features added since the review testing period. The number of verified games that can run standalone on the headset has now reached 130, and a Gamepad mode has been added to the unified dashboard for running 2D games. Additionally, multi-link streaming, input focus, depth projection, and image sharpness have all been improved.

No launch date or local pricing for Taiwan has been provided in the source material; actual availability plans are subject to official announcements from Valve.
