Playdate Season 3 Details Arrive Courtesy of Panic, One Hour Ahead of Apple's Announcement

One hour before Apple's iPhone event begins, Panic is set to livestream on YouTube, unveiling the Playdate Season 3 lineup and release date. Given the stream was only announced 23 hours prior, the timing seems anything but coincidental.

Playdate Season 3 Details Arrive Courtesy of Panic, One Hour Ahead of Apple's Announcement

September 9, 2026 is the day Apple holds its annual iPhone event. Panic chose that very same day—exactly one hour before the event begins—to livestream news about Playdate Season 3. Apple's event time had been public for weeks, yet Panic only announced its "Playdate Update Showcase" 23 hours ahead of time. The timing choice itself speaks volumes.

The livestream is set to begin at noon Eastern Time, streaming simultaneously on Panic's YouTube channel and its official livestream site. It'll cover the full Season 3 game lineup as well as the final release date. Following the pattern from Panic's past two seasons, these games won't all drop at once—instead, they'll unlock weekly after launch, keeping fresh surprises popping up in players' Playdate consoles for well over a month.

Last Season: $39, Six Weeks, Eight Games

Season 2 launched in May 2025 at $39, running six weeks with two games released each week. The lineup included Subset Games' Fulcrum Defender, Dig! Dig! Dino! from Dom2D and Fáyer, Amano's CatchaDiablos, and Pixel Ghost's Shadowgate PD. The standout surprise was Blippo+, a wonderfully absurd cable TV simulator co-created by YACHT, Telefantasy Studios, and Dustin Mierau. Though it's now also available on Steam, Panic maintains its true home is Playdate. According to figures Panic has shared, Season 2 has sold to over 15,000 people so far.

Refunding Tariffs They Never Should've Kept

Right before the Season 3 news dropped, Panic did something rare in the industry: it refunded, dollar for dollar, the extra import taxes the US government collected from consumers under Trump's tariff policy. Amazon, Sony, and Nintendo are all facing consumer lawsuits over the same tariff dispute, yet almost none of them have chosen to pass refunded tariffs back to the customers who actually paid them. Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser told GameDeveloper: "That was never our money to begin with, so giving it back just felt right. It's one of those easy calls where you know you're doing the right thing."

The little yellow Playdate console is currently out of stock on Panic's official site. Fans hoping to grab one in person can try their luck at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, running October 9 through 11. Since launching in 2022, Panic says Playdate has sold over 80,000 units total.
