Age Verification Rolls Out on Discord: No Extra Steps for Most, Several Ways for Unverified Accounts to Confirm Age

This week marks the launch of Discord's automatic classification of adult and teen accounts, using signals such as account activity, with roughly 90% of users expected to pass without any action. Accounts that aren't auto-verified can instead prove their age via a credit card, the App Store, or a facial age scan.

Age Verification Rolls Out on Discord: No Extra Steps for Most, Several Ways for Unverified Accounts to Confirm Age

How long an account has existed, which servers it's joined, how active it's been—things that used to just be backend data points are now what Discord uses to determine whether a user is an adult. The policy rolled out this week, coming a little over half a year after Discord scrapped its facial scanning and ID verification plans back in February over privacy concerns.

In a blog post, Discord explained that its system automatically sorts users into "adult" or "teen" groups based on markers like account age, servers joined, and activity level. The company specifically emphasized that it does not read message or call content to estimate age, and that group classifications won't appear on user profiles or be visible to other server members. Users can check which group they've been assigned to under the account status page in their user settings menu. Discord estimates that about 90% of users on the platform will be correctly classified without needing to take any further action.

Users placed in the "unverified" category will be presented with a verification menu. Depending on regional regulations, options may include credit card, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, the AgeKey credential service, or more familiar methods like ID scanning or a video selfie. Discord states that any third-party age verification vendor must permanently delete user data after completing verification, and that facial age estimation runs entirely on the user's own device without any data being uploaded.

Accounts sorted into the teen group will face three restrictions. First, messages from non-friends will all be routed to a message requests inbox, and the system will show a warning prompt when a friend request comes from someone with no mutual friends or shared small servers. Second, certain content will be blocked, including images flagged as sensitive by the content filtering system, as well as servers, channels, and bot commands restricted to adult viewing. Third, full profiles and activity history will only be visible to friends and members of small servers. Accounts classified as "unverified" will have the first two restrictions applied before they complete age verification.
