Envy, identity and the space between: KOTARO TANIYAMA’s YAMANOTE runway in Busan

KOTARO TANIYAMA presented ten looks from its 2027 spring/summer YAMANOTE collection at Busan Fashion Week on October 29. Sculptural shoulders, draping and gathers explore boundaries between people and clothing, with participation by writer Awa Ito and a performance by KATIE.

Envy, identity and the space between: KOTARO TANIYAMA’s YAMANOTE runway in Busan

Admiring someone else while wanting to retain your own outline is one tension behind KOTARO TANIYAMA’s new collection. The Tokyo-based brand presented ten looks from its 2027 spring/summer YAMANOTE collection on the REVLURA × KOTARO TANIYAMA stage at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 1, Hall 3B, in Busan on October 29. The show has ended; the subsequent reporting and photographs made public on October 30 allow a look back at emotions translated into clothing lines.

YAMANOTE, written 山の手, refers to residential areas on higher ground within Japanese cities. The brand draws on urban women’s admiration, envy and acceptance of feelings toward themselves and others. That is a collection narrative, not a psychological description of all women. Where clothes stand away from the body and where they draw close offers a more concrete starting point than a seasonal colour alone.

Shoulders extend outward while fabric falls downward

Tailoring, draping and silhouette frame the collection. Sculptural shoulders define an outer contour; cascading drapes from shoulder to bodice, cowl necklines and side gathers introduce changes as the fabric moves. These are observable design contrasts. A sharp shoulder need not stand for aggression, nor soft fabric for fragility: one garment can accommodate both visual qualities.

In the full runway finale photograph, the leading model wears a pale-lavender V-neck look with outward-pointing shoulders and a narrow black belt, contrasting with exposed legs. Other models follow behind. The photograph records those lines and a moment of posture, but cannot establish the feel, support or everyday walking comfort of every garment. Colour alone is also insufficient to assign an unverified product name to the photographed look.

Different dress forms give the back a voice too

The design description identifies several dress directions. Violet Hour combines lavender, sculptural shoulders and a peplum hem; One-Shoulder Cascade lets draping flow from one shoulder; Vertebra uses central gathers at front and back to suggest a spine-like line. These distinguish designs, but do not mean every selected photograph shows one of them. Their names and features should not be combined into a single imagined garment.

Materials listed across the collection include silk chiffon, cotton, Tencel, cupro and jersey. Item-by-item fibre percentages were not supplied, so the entire runway cannot be described as pure silk or one fabric. The new Goblet Heel Slingback Pumps extend the silhouette with a sculptural 75mm heel. That is a disclosed design measurement, not a test proving comfort, a height-enhancing effect or suitability for long walks.

Writing and music leave room for individual voices

Japanese essayist Awa Ito participated in the show, alongside a performance by singer KATIE. Another event photograph shows a performer holding a microphone in a short grey textured top, pale shorts and black boots. Her movement differs from the finale procession; it is a performance image and should not be labelled another model’s runway look. Clothing, writing and sound meet on the same stage rather than presenting garments only as static products.

The brand’s core concept is The Boundary Between You and Me. Looking at this collection, viewers can consider the span of the shoulders, the points where gathers pull inward, and what the clothes reveal or enclose. This is a way to observe design, not a promise that wearing a brand resolves emotions. The checked material does not list Taiwan prices, release dates or retailers. A runway presentation for spring/summer 2027 is not confirmation that the collection is already on sale in Taiwan.

Questions and answers

When and where was this runway held?

On October 29 at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 1, Hall 3B, in Busan, presenting ten YAMANOTE spring/summer 2027 looks. The show has ended; this is not a future session open for registration.

Does a 75mm heel mean the shoes suit long walks?

No. It is the published heel measurement for Goblet Heel Slingback Pumps, without a wear or long-walking test by this publication.

Are Taiwan prices and release dates confirmed?

The checked material does not list Taiwan prices, launch dates or retailers. Confirm with the brand rather than treating the runway date as a Taiwan retail launch.
